The Kalamata olive tree is a vigorous, evergreen olive variety originating from the region of Kalamata in Greece. It is prized for producing the famous large, dark-purple Kalamata olives, known for their rich flavor and meaty texture.

The tree has an attractive, spreading growth habit with silvery-green, lance-shaped leaves that provide year-round ornamental appeal. Mature trees can reach 6–10 meters (20–33 feet) in height if left unpruned, though they are often maintained at a smaller size for easier harvesting. Kalamata olive trees are drought tolerant once established and thrive in full sun and well-drained soils.

In spring, the tree produces small, creamy-white flowers that develop into large, almond-shaped fruits. Harvest typically occurs in late autumn to winter when the olives have turned a deep purple-black color. In addition to their fruit production, Kalamata olive trees are valued as landscape specimens for Mediterranean-style gardens and can be grown in large containers in suitable climates.
