Protea 'Amy' is an attractive evergreen shrub valued for its soft pink flower heads, compact form, and reliable flowering habit. It is a popular hybrid protea grown for both ornamental gardens and cut-flower production due to its consistent performance and elegant blooms.
Key characteristics:
- Size: Typically grows around 1.5–2.5 m tall and 1.5–2 m wide, forming a dense, well-branched shrub.
- Flowers: Produces medium to large blooms in soft pink to rose tones with a creamy-white centre. Flowers are long-lasting and generally appear from autumn through spring, depending on climate.
- Foliage: Evergreen with leathery grey-green leaves that provide year-round structure and contrast nicely with the pastel flower tones.
- Growing conditions: Prefers full sun and very well-drained, low-phosphorus soils. It is drought tolerant once established and performs best in Mediterranean, coastal, or water-wise gardens.
- Uses: Ideal as a feature shrub, low informal hedge, or cut flower variety. Its soft colouring makes it especially suited to romantic or pastel-themed garden designs and floral arrangements.
- Wildlife value: Nectar-rich flowers attract birds and pollinators, adding movement and biodiversity to the garden.
