Protea cynaroides 'Little Prince' is a compact, dwarf form of the King Protea, prized for its large, dramatic flower heads and suitability for smaller gardens and containers. It produces striking dark pink to deep rose blooms with a prominent white, silky center, creating a bold architectural effect in the landscape.
Key characteristics:
- Size: Typically grows to about 0.8–1.0 m tall and 0.75–1.0 m wide, making it much smaller than standard King Proteas.
- Flowers: Large, plate-sized blooms with deep pink bracts surrounding a silvery-white center. Flowering generally occurs from autumn through spring, depending on climate.
- Foliage: Evergreen with thick, leathery green leaves that provide year-round structure.
- Growing conditions: Prefers full sun, excellent drainage, acidic to neutral soil, and low watering once established. It is drought tolerant and can handle light to moderate frost.
- Uses: Ideal as a feature plant, in coastal gardens, containers, low hedges, and for cut flowers. Its nectar-rich blooms also attract birds and pollinators.
In appearance, the flower resembles a giant artichoke-like bloom, with layers of pink bracts opening around a soft, white center—one of the most eye-catching flowers in the garden
