Protea 'Harlequin' is a distinctive evergreen shrub admired for its striking bi-coloured flowers and strong ornamental impact. It is a hybrid protea valued for its reliable flowering, bold appearance, and suitability as both a garden feature and a cut-flower variety.
Key characteristics:
- Size: Typically grows around 1.5–2.5 m tall and 1.5–2 m wide, forming a dense, upright shrub with a naturally rounded shape.
- Flowers: Produces large, eye-catching blooms with a unique mix of creamy-white and soft pink to deep rose tones. The contrasting colours give each flower a “painted” or variegated appearance, which is where the name Harlequin comes from. Flowering generally occurs from autumn through spring.
- Foliage: Evergreen with leathery grey-green leaves that provide year-round structure and a muted backdrop to the showy blooms.
- Growing conditions: Prefers full sun and very well-drained, low-phosphorus soils. Once established it is drought tolerant and performs best in coastal or Mediterranean-style climates.
- Uses: Ideal as a feature shrub, informal hedge, or premium cut flower. The unusual flower colouring makes it especially popular in floral arrangements.
- Wildlife value: Nectar-rich blooms attract birds and pollinators, adding life and movement to the garden.
